Section 3 Lesson 1: Deriving meaningful information from data

Objectives

Manipulate raw data to create meaningful indicators and calculate targets
Explain when to use bar graphs and line graphs
Explain the role of the team and the data custodian in improving data use

This section is further broken down into 5 lessons with more specific data use principles:

  • Lesson 1: Lean: We need to limit our data to just enough to tell a clear concise story

  • Lesson 2: Standardized: We need to standardize our data with precise definitions and calculations

  • Lesson 3: Trends: For the full story our data needs to tell us a story over time, not just at a single moment

  • Lesson 4: Direction: To evaluate performance we need to understand where we are coming from (baseline) and where we are going (target)

  • Lesson 5: Visualization: When we display our data in engaging visually appealing ways we can understand it faster and more easily
